Promoting Historic Preservation, Education, and Patriotism
The Coconino Chapter, NSDAR, strives to fulfill the objectives of the Daughters of the American Revolution in the areas of historic preservation, education, and patriotism. Each year, we choose service projects our chapter members can perform together or separately. We also attend patriotic events and encourage our members to perform community service.
With many service-oriented opportunities in DAR, our members can find meaningful activities to choose from that further these objectives. If you are interested in joining us or learning more about DAR membership, contact us for information on our meeting dates and location.
Historic preservation
Our chapter works with the Northern Arizona University (NAU) Arboretum to continue the historic preservation and propagation of the McCormick Rose, brought to Arizona by Margaret McCormick, the wife of Richard McCormick, the second Governor of the Arizona Territory.
History of the McCormick Rose
The cutting accompanied the McCormicks by steamship from New York to Jamaica and thence to Aspinwall at the Isthmus of Panama. Next, the cutting went with them overland on muleback to the Pacific Coast, stagecoach to Yuma, steamer trip up the Colorado River, and across the Mohave Desert to Prescott. Needless to say, the McCormick Rose has demonstrated itself a hardy cultivar and flourishes today after years of benign neglect in Prescott and at Old Main at NAU.
Information is from a May 6, 2005, Arizona Daily Sun article, written by Dana Prom Smith.
Education
Our chapter acknowledges the Reserve Officers Training Corps (ROTC) and Junior Officers Training Corps (JROTC) recipients of JROTC awards for their qualities of dependability and good character, adherence to military discipline, leadership ability, military and scholastic achievement, and fundamental and patriotic understanding of the importance of ROTC.
ROTC awards were presented to Army and Air Force cadets of the ROTC unit at Northern Arizona University and cadets at various high schools including Chinle High School, Coconino High School and Tuba City High School.
